Before you read this blog entry I feel I need to explain things... just in case it doesn't coming across like I thought it did.

This entry is about how funny the advert is or isn't. As it's my blog it is safe for you to assume that I find it funny. You may not. Fair enough, you are entitled to that opinion. This blog entry is not about Carlsberg, the capitalistic pigs (*spit*), are trying to get to you to buy more booze. I couldn't give a shit, I just think the advert is funny. It's all about the humour baby!

Now, on with the blog entry and how it was before I added this bit. Feel free to read all the comments. You may be a while!

I guess ~~most~~ some of you have seen this advert.

Here's the translation for you... in case you were wondering what they are saying.

Thankfully, I haven't seen any television for over a year now. I haven't the faintest idea what that advert was all about! It seemed like a Mickey-take on a Guinness advert. Am I at all close?

        Wow. This flippant post letting people who might have seen the advert and not got the joke know what they had missed has got a bit out of hand.
        
        Tom, there is an extensive Irish community in the UK, many members of which will have some Gaelic (even I had some before I moved here). Just because you've not been let in on the joke before now doesn't mean nobody else had - this blog is not the only source of information in the world, believe it or not. All Landers was doing was letting his friends in on it!
        
        What do you say we drop it, eh? You've already stated you hadn't seen the advert before, and didn't find it funny even with the translation; it's obviously not keyed to your personal sense of humour, but many other people will find it funny, and I think you're being a little obtuse.

        I think it's fair to assume that most people in the UK (this is BCUK, right?) seeing the advert don't know any Gaelic.
        
        Try watching the advert again and think about what it really says about someone who drinks Carlsberg. Are they confident people sure of themselves? No, they have no personal confidence, they are unable to say "Sorry I can't sing or dance" and instead produce a stream of gibberish. They are so lacking in confidence that they have to put on this fake show instead of being honest.
        
        This is the sort of person that the sellers of Carlsberg think is buying their product. How would you feel, if you were a Carlsberg drinker, knowing that they think you are a social inadequate who is unable to be honest?

        My degree in it proves very useful. It got my job in various media companies as well as teaching A-levels in similar subjects.

        Okay, I watched it again, and after I'd stop smiling at the humour behind it I looked at the hidden meaning. I see three Irish fellas who get pressured into doing something they don't want to do other wise they're going to get thrown out (that's just one possibility) of the bar they are in. They want a good night so thankfully one of them thinks on his feet (I'm using a saying there, I don't actually think his brains are in his feet - thought I should point that!) and starts spouting his school day Irish.         That's an entirely valid interpretation and I see your logic. But, we are given no basis for the assumption that this is the only available (or even decent) bar in town. It might be, but we don't know: all we have to go on is what we are shown - a "good night" might be perfectly possible elsewhere. And who is to say that a response to the girl of "Sorry, I don't sing or dance" would result in eviction anyway? It might, but again we aren't shown that. My assumption (unprovable but consistent with all the bars I have ever known) is that they want the punters money and as long as they aren't trouble-makers their money is welcome.
        
        So all we can confidently say is that when asked to do something, the response of the Carlsberg drinkers is not honesty and self-confidence but a dubious fake bluster that could easily have had the reverse effect. Who is to say that the bar-owner (not shown) wasn't a Gaelic speaker: after all, since there are some Irish punters it's not so far a stretch that the owner (or indeed another customer) might also have been a Gaelic speaker. But, this is just a possibility.

"We" are not having a discussion about the meaning of an advert, YOU are bludgeoning us over the head with your opinion. We've already heard that you don't think it's a very good advert, so stop telling us!
        
        My suggestion for you to drop it was based on the fact that you are increasingly coming off as a twat and a snob, and you might want to stop before it makes a permanent impression. It just looks like you're trying to show everyone how clever you are, not having a telly and having studied media studies are not marks of intelligence. It's an advert, not a lost Zeffirelli masterpiece.
        
        By all means, analyse an advert to death if you like - but this post was about the joke the advert included, not the economic background of the fictional bar the advert takes place in. Landers just wanted to let people in on the joke. I repeat - you are being obtuse. Your comment with the gibberish could actually be construed as offensive to Gaelic speakers - just because you don't understand something does not make it gibberish.

        Yeah frinstance, I haven't seen the advert and I don't speak gaelic/irish or drink beer, but my parents do (watch Tv and speak gaelic although they hate beer) so maybe they thought it was a hoot who knows.
        
        The thing is we are living in a diverse culture thankfully and so different people will see humour in different situations and in different ways that maybe only they can relate to. So until we are forced to conform maybe we should enjoy this freedom?

        Sir, jokes in Chinese could be a very effective weapon when British squads would fight against the Chinese, because... the kind of fun that some people understand and some not – depending on the language the fun is expressed in - is a known strategy, mostly used by the British Army (although not really invented by them...)
        
        The strategy is called joke-warfare – see pictures below – and I suppose a similar refined strategy is underlying the Carlsberg advert.
        
        Landers is quite right, that advert wasn’t made for selling more beer, but with the purpose of killing those that understanding Irish, while those that don’t will remain totally unaffected. Very clever!

        Sorry have I missed the point here? I thought it was funny which when I showed an Irish friend of mine, she did say that it was hilarious and so typical (thoughdidn't elaborate on typical of what!) The point is it is an advert. Why analyse it?

        Actually yes, I do. The goal of the advert is to sell lager, but to make it memorable they make it funny. It's not clear at first why it's funny if you don't speak Gaelic, but when you're down the pub and chatting to a mate, he might let you in on the joke - triggering your memory of the advert the next time you see Carlsberg on tap at the bar. Humour sells, who knew? So while one purpose of the clip is to sell lager, the other purpose is to make people laugh. The two things are not mutually exclusive.

        Advertisers would have been given a remit from Carlsberg.

Very interesting. I wonder if Carlsberg really want to associate themselves with the kind of nasty bar where customers are made to feel the need to perform and win over a hostile crowd just to be allowed to stay and have a good time. Or maybe the ritual is intended to remind their customers of the fear young men have of being asked by authority figures over the bar if they have ID to show are old enough to drink.

The emotional state is not something I can identify with, hence find funny. I don't speak Irish or Welsh, but I think the barman's aggressive facial gestures made him came across as a rather unpleasant sort of fellow, whatever the language.

This is a post about a joke, there was no need for it to go this far.

It's very sad that Tom took what was supposed to make people smile and smooshed the life out of it. I will take my share of the blame: I instigated the conflagration, but I was genuinely only trying to make him see that he was taking things too far. My first comment along those lines was a friendly "let's agree to disagree", and it blew up from there because he was unwilling to concede that while he might be right, so were we. Perhaps I should have sent him a private message instead.

Tom, I reiterate what I said to you above, you may well be a lovely person. It just doesn't seem like that from what happened tonight. I'm not ashamed of anything I've said, and I don't think this reflects badly on me.

  That discussion got far more intense than it should have done, but some good things were said on both sides and ultimately I think we all had a good laugh chatting about the issues it raised. On that level, it counts as a good advert. But I stand by my view that the makers of Carlsberg have a very dim view of their punters and on the basis of this advert I would be wanting to distance myself from their product.

Ok ok gosh - I thought this was the worst Carlsberg advert I have seen so far! That was until I saw this post and realised what they were saying - which actually is quite funny. But I didn't realise it cause it sounded like a load of gibberish to me.

Hi! Would just like to say the ad is great, Tom was indeed overbearing and being a twat in this case, however: ocassionally he is actually quite nice, and does have interesting view points on some issues. He is also very good with a camera...

Speaking as someone who's done media studies I think we're completely missing the REAL point of this...

Obviously the agency behind it are trying to use the cake reference to allude to Marie Antoinette and the jumper to bring to mind the essence of Val Doonican, therefore proving via the medium of advertising that if Marie Antoinette had been able to go outside to go to the toilet she may have led France into a happier time (hence the clouds in the sky reference) where everyone had a fox and sang folk songs like our Val...

Of course, some uneducated people might think that's a steaming pile of cow dung but I have done Media Studies so can be as overbearing, patronising and generally argumentative and annoying as I want.

personally i could never understand how the man got into those red stilletoes, as they clearly were a clash to the dark trousers, wont make me buy stella artois 4, then i realised wrong advert, still funny though!!!!

Firstly, I thought the advert was quite funny - thank you for translating for an ignorant Englishman!
Secondly, don't like Carlsberg, actually always choose Guinness when it's available (could be why I found the advert funny - heart of an Irishman!)
Thirdly, the comments were hilarious!!!! I'm now waiting with baited breath to read the responses!
